April Birthstones: Herkimer Diamond

April’s birthstone is diamond, which prices a lot of people out of their own month. Herkimer quartz is what we carry instead.

It is a naturally faceted quartz, clear enough that it needs no cutting, and it has long been worn as an amplifier, the stone you pair with another to make it louder.

Set in sterling silver, Silvaria or 18K gold bonded over sterling, depending on the piece. Nickel free, and no two stones alike.

    FAQs

Diamond is the traditional April stone. Ours is the Herkimer diamond — a naturally faceted quartz found only in upstate New York.

No, and we'd rather say so plainly. A Herkimer diamond is quartz, not carbon. It earned the name because it forms with facets and points already on it — sparkling straight out of the rock, without ever being cut. What you're buying is a genuinely rare quartz, not a stand-in for a diamond.

That's exactly what a Herkimer is. Clear, bright, genuinely rare, and a fraction of the price — which makes it the April stone you can actually give rather than the one you look at.

Herkimer County, New York, and nowhere else. Double-terminated quartz occurs elsewhere, but only stones from that region are Herkimers — the same way only sparkling wine from one part of France is Champagne.

Clarity and resilience. Herkimers have long been associated with a clear head and with strength — fitting for a stone that arrives finished and needs nothing done to it.

Yes. Herkimers sit around 7.5 on the Mohs scale, slightly harder than ordinary quartz, which is well inside the range for something worn daily. Set in sterling silver, these are built to be kept on.
