When you hear “New York”, what comes to mind? A bustling metropolis for sure, great sports teams, beautiful upstate scenery, and diamonds. Wait…what? Are diamonds mined in New York?
You may be surprised to hear that New York state is the home of Herkimer Diamonds, which are actually naturally faceted, doubly terminated quartz crystals. Named for Herkimer County in the Mohawk Valley where they are found, this durable crystal scores a seven on the Mohs hardness scale, which is a bit harder than a steel nail!
Even though they’re actually crystals, they’re called diamonds because of their clarity and glass-like appearance, and because they’re naturally faceting, forming two six-sided pyramids at each end of their structure and the six faces that form in the center. Herkimer Diamonds range in color from transparent and colorless, to a smokey, dark gray color.
With 18 naturally occurring faces, Herkimer Diamonds have a very high refractive index, and an innate ability to capture the light.
